Today the new Blackberry Torch was announced together with the new Blackberry OS 6, the pair being touted as the ultimate iPhone 4 ‘killer’.
AT&T and Research in Motion (RIM) used a joint press event to announce the newest smartphone Blackberry Torch – immediately it was also available in the AT&T online shop, including pictures, video and specifications. And what about Amazon? When did they sell it? Let’s see next.
The new device has the latest Blackberry OS version 6 on board which was announced simultaneously in a press release from Research in Motion. All information including screenshots can be found at http://www.blackberry.com/6, which went live just now. The new OS has a browser with expanded capabilities, universal search functions and improved multimedia functionality. Notifications are handled in a different way now by touching them and viewing them on-screen directly.

Full Blackberry Torch specifications are as follows:

Network: UMTS 2100/1900/850/800 MHz (Bands 1,2,5/6) GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900MHz
Screen: 3.2 inch touch screen 480×360 pixels, pull-out
Memory: 512 MB RAM + 512 MB Flash + 4 GB Flash + 4 GB MicroSD
Operating system: BlackBerry OS 6 with integrated search function and new user interface
Web Browser: Full HTML tabbed browser with “PC-like ” Web browsing. Tabs, pinch/zoom
Bluetooth: version 2.1
Wi-Fi: 802.11b/g/n
Camera: 5 Megapixel with flash and videos with scenes
Media sync: iTunes, Windows Media Player, photos and Video. Synchronization can be done wirelessly via WiFi
Audio connection: 3.5mm audio input
Measurements: 111 x 62 x 14.6 mm
Weight: 161.1 g. 111 x 62 x 14.6 mm
Battery: 1.300 mAHr Lithium cell
Speak time: GSM 5,5 hours and 3G 5.8 hours
Standby time: GSM 17 days , 3G 13 days

It is expected that while in the US the new smartphone can only be bought via AT&T for the time being, the device will be arriving in Europe in the not too distant future. It is not clear yet if any of the major telecom providers will have exclusivity like T-Mobile with the iPhone, let us hope not.

We will be providing a more extensive hands-on review in the future once we have managed to play around with it for some more time.

Samsung’s newest smartphone flagship is currently one of the top products in the high-end segment. It is a very slim device and despite the 4-inch screen it is not perceived as an over-sized phone. While most Apple-owners will designate this machine as an iPhone-rized clone, but once in use the owners will only appreciate the handling and top quality user interface (Android OS) compared to its main rival.

The screen is very clear and sharp (AMOLED 4″), only when used outside in full sunny conditions the screen becomes unreadable. The screen will rotate very quickly upon moving the device 90 or 180 degrees, watching YouTube movies on this absolute cracker of a screen becomes a delight unsurpassed in the industry so far.
Any Blackberry or Nokia user will quickly make the switch to the Samsung Galaxy S i9000 once they have viewed the capabilities of this screen, it’s just that awesome.

The camera (on the front of the phone) is also of very high standard and shoots video in 720p. While most smartphone buyers are not really interested in having these features on a cell phone, they are nice to have.

Swype is the Hype – or so they say at Samsung. As with all phones without a hardware keyboard, the software becomes even more important to control the device. It is not advisable though to use it in portrait mode, in landscape mode the ‘virtual keyboard’ is a dream. It takes some getting used to, but Swype knocks the socks off most users when it comes to ease of use and practicality.

There is no shortage of connectivity either, all Bluetooth connected devices worked without problems. This included in-car connectivity (Jabra & Parrot) as well as the built-in GPS using Google Maps (comes free with the device).

Using the device with all it’s functionality, bells and whistles, the battery of 1500 mAh will last just short of a day. So including the normal calls, 1 or two hours of internet per day, some 25-odd e-mail messages etc., that’s not a bad result.

The Samsung Galaxy S i9000 is currently one of the best all-rounders out there. It has one of the best screens available and will upload your HD videos to YouTube if required. The vast support from Android Market as well as the exclusive look and feel design of this wonderful product makes it a winner.

It will be less than a month before Nokia will ship their newest smartphone N8 to the dealers. The phone was announced last spring and Nokia is already showing the N8 to the press this week. The design, the new Symbian OS 3 and the 12 mega-pixel camera are the most important selling features.

Yes, a 12 mega-pixel camera with HD video quality can be called quite unique in the ever more competitive mobile phone market. Most potential customers will be interested to know how this latest smartphone from Nokia holds up against the Apple iPhone 4, but it is not really a fair comparison – the iPhone 4 has a 5 mega-pixel camera, no challenge for the Nokia N8 (which has a Carl Zeiss lens as well to boost).

In addition to all the juicy hardware specifications, the Nokia N8 comes with a photo editing software built-in. This will allow users to create professional quality after-effects. The only preliminary downside seen so far is the fact that there is no optical zoom on the unit, but there aren’t a lot of smartphones that have this capability anyway.

Lenovo recently updated the Y-series notebook lineup, adding the 14-inch Y460 and 15.6-inch Y560 to the mix. These new models offer faster graphics options than their predecessors, with an ATI Radeon 5650 crammed into the Y460 and ATI Radeon 5730 inside the Y560. In this review we take a look at the smaller of the two notebooks—the IdeaPad Y460—to see how well it stacks up against the competition.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 Specifications:

14.0″ HD Wide LED 1366×768

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Intel Core i5 520M processor (2.40GHz, 3MB cache)

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 with 1GB VRAM and Intel GMA HD Switchable Graphics

4GB DDR3-1066 RAM (2x 2GB)

500GB 5400RPM hard drive (Seagate 5400.6)

Intel Wireless Wi-Fi Link 1000BGN

Built-in Bluetooth v2.1+EDR

8X DVD burner

One-year limited warranty

6-cell Li-ion battery (11.1V, 57Wh)

Weight: 4.98lbs

Dimensions: 13.4 x 0.79–1.3 x 9.25 inches

MSRP: $1,199 ($999 Street)

Build and Design
The new Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 looks completely redesigned from the previous generation. From the outside the lid has a similar dark-colored pattern trimmed with an orange border, but it now has large chromed hinges instead of being concealed previously. Inside, the previously white keyboard and bezel has been changed to a black keyboard with gunmetal paint covered trim. The all-white interior on the old model was hard to stomach for most people and I think the new look is much nicer. Other cool design elements on the new Y460 include JBL speakers beneath the screen and a unique matte and glossy screen cover that helps hide fingerprints.

The Ideapad Y460 includes one screen option; a WXGA resolution 14-inch panel. With its higher-end graphics option and performance inspired components we were kind of hoping to see a WXGA+ (1440×900) or HD+ (1600×900). The lower resolution panel obviously costs less so it might be a price consideration but I would personally pay extra for the option if it was given to me. The panel rates about average with good color and contrast, but falls short of some of the high-end screens like you might find on a HP ENVY or Apple MacBook. At peak backlight levels we measured a max brightness of 218nit, which is high for indoor viewing but not really bright enough for outdoor viewing. Combined with the glossy screen surface you would be hard pressed to view the screen outside unless you were under some very good shade from a building or tree.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 has a good selection of ports and features, making use of every inch of space around the perimeter. The system offers three USB 2.0 ports, one eSATA/USB combo port, VGA and HDMI-out, Ethernet, and audio jacks. The system also includes a SDHC-card reader, ExpressCard/34 slot, and a DVD-burner. Outside of including DisplayPort or FireWire I don’t see what else Lenovo could have added to make it any better.
